Let’s look at a necessary but overlooked area in most homes. The mudroom…aka the drop zone. If you’re fortunate enough to have one, then you know it’s where everyone enters the home and drops coats, shoes, backpacks, keys, hats, mittens, dog leashes and the list goes on. This space often becomes a “cluttered mess” or an “obstacle course.” Furthermore, no one wants to look at it.

There are some simple things that can be installed to help keep this area of the home organized and even presentable. Yes, you can maintain the function of the space without sacrificing style. It can be a welcoming entryway that’s organized and neat, but also contains beautiful accessories and artwork that flows well with the rest of your home. Here are 7 tips to help guide you.

1. Mounted Coat Rack

It’s necessary to have a place to hang coats, scarves, hats, dog leashes, light totes and even pool towels. You can always purchase one to mount on the wall or you can be creative and make one.

2. Bench

The perfect place to sit and put on or take off shoes. Especially if you have little ones, they need a place to sit so you can help them with their shoes, coats, and hats. Here’s a place where you can also add a decorative pillow(s) to create some style.

3. Place for Shoes/Boots 

Designate a place for shoes so they are not taken off and left in front of the door. You can use a carpet runner, large mat, or a boot tray.

4. Console/Entryway Table  

This can be one of those beautiful design items where you can express your style while providing the much-needed storage for the space. For instance, place a decorative bowl where keys and other small objects can be gathered. You can also add some greenery, a candle, picture, or other accessories to create a welcoming entryway. Drawers can stow away sunblock, bug spray and sunglasses. If the drawers are deep enough, they can store hats, gloves, and scarves.

5. Decorative Bins/Baskets 

Add some style that fits in with the décor. You can find quite a few decorative options, from fabric cubes that come in many colors and designs to wicker and wood options. This is a beautiful way to hide away more of the items we use every day, especially if you don’t have deep drawers or shelf space.

6. Mirror

A fantastic way to reflect light and make the space feel lighter and brighter…not to mention being able check out your appearance before leaving the house. There are so many great options out there that can complement your décor and add something special. Be sure to choose a mirror that is in proportion to the entryway table and the height of your ceilings. A good rule to go by is that the width of the mirror/artwork should be 2/3 to 3/4 the width of the furniture. Also, if you’re hanging your mirror/art above furniture, the bottom of the piece should hang 6-12 inches from the top of the furniture.

7. Artwork

Find artwork that creates some interest. A pop of color, a beautiful landscape, or inspirational artwork. Be sure that it complements the other furnishings, flooring, and wall color in the space. Note: It’s best to hang single artwork at eye level. The center of any stand-alone wall covering is about 60” inches from the floor.

As I mentioned, this space can be considered the “drop zone” but it doesn’t have to look that way. Keep in mind that this is an entry point to the home, it is the place that welcomes you in and it can make you “feel home.”
